Exhaust size help.....

I have a 1981 GS450/L that I want to replace the mufflers on....I am wanting something that looks a little more aggressive and definitely sounds more aggressive....so I need to know what size muffler I can put on this bike. I am redoing my GS and making it more of a rat bike look, and new mufflers will definitely make it pop.....so I would really appreciate any help you guys can offer me with this, even if you could suggest where I might look for some decent mufflers at a fair price.....

Hi Ms. Krooozn,

Do you just want to weld on some mufflers or replace the entire exhaust, header pipes and all? Are you thinking 2-into-1? For some generic slip-on type of mufflers, check with J.C. Whitney and Dennis Kirk. I don't know if they sell entire exhaust systems for your bike, but you could do a little shopping around at Laser Exhaust Systems. There's not a lot of new aftermarket stuff for these classic bikes. You may need to get something fabbed up for you at a muffler shop or something. Perhaps trolling ebay might turn up a period Mac or Kerker for your model.

With a twin you actually have more freedom to try a few things. Look at other makes and models and see if another system might fit. I suggest a trip to a junkyard where a system from another bike could be tested against yours. If something else is workable then you might find an aftermarket system for THAT bike that can work on yours.

Anything you come up with is bound to need tuning of the carbs and fabrication of mounting brackets, in addition to longer or shorter exhaust bolts at the head. But that's the fun of ye olde GS.

If your looking for some aggressive sounding pipes get some "Sportster" take offs from flea-Bay. In a lot of cases they are not true HD product but knock offs. They have minimal baffles (if any) and definitely add a bark to a twin. I ran them on my tracker. You might need to "fatten up" your carbs to compensate as they are going to have the bike run lean.

My 450e came with a Mac 2 to 1 on it. It had a metalic rattle to it and it took some fooling around with to get that rattle gone. It's not a very deep or loud sounding pipe. I've seen the Mac's, new at sites for less than 300. That's about all I know of the matter. Good luck.
