Compatible engine for GS 1100 GK (1983) ?

    Hi,
I have a GS 1100 GK (1983) with about 66.000 original miles. It?s a great bike, but lately it sounds like I will need an engine replacement pretty soon.
I don?t want to open up the old engine and try to repair the problem since I think this will lead to the discovery of other problems ;-)
Therefore, I consider to put a complete new (or used) engine in the bike. Are there any other engines compatible with the GS 1100 Gk (for instance from the 750 - but what model ???) ?

    Thanxs !

    Any luck?

Just curious if you have found a different motor.
I need an oil pan for my 83' GK. If you decide to swap out motors and would like to part your old one out, let me know.
    Send info to Clsclwn851@msn.com

    Thanks,
    Joel

There was an 1100 engine on Ebay for sale. I don't know if it's still there though...

The GK has a shaft-driven 8-valve engine, common to all GS1100G's and GK's, 1982, 83, or 84. They're all interchangeable, all the same engine. If you're willing to go down in displacement, an 82 or 83 GS850G engine will fit just fine also.

My 84 GK has 69,000 miles on it. 66,000 doesn't seem like many miles for a GK. What's wrong with it?

          you can also use a GS 1000G engine from 1979 to 1981.(became a 1100 for 82)
the 1979 gs1000 and gs850 engine used points ignition, so you would have to change out the ignition systems, also the 79 used the older slide type carbs and had a differant head.
so the easyest way is to locate a 850, 1000,or 1100 "G" (shaft drive) engine from 80 up.
a 850 or 1000 from 1979 will work but will require some modifications to work.

Focus, I'm not altogether sure about this, but the earlier GS850's and GS1000's (80 and 81) won't fit the later GK frame. The swingarms and the Ujoint/shaft are different, and I don't think they'll match up.

The 82 and 83 GS850G and GS1100G and GK are a perfect match when it comes to fitting things. I'm not so sure about the earlier 850's and 1000's.

By the way, there was no 1979 GS1000G. The first one of these came out in 1980. The only 1979 shaftie was the 850.
