New guy confused with gas line hookups.

Forgive my ignorance as I am new to this. I bought a 1980 Suzkuki GS1000g
from the widow of the original owner. It is in really nice shape but has been sitting for 20 years. I cleaned the carbs and replaced all jets and have been cleaning it up and preparing it to run again. I'm still waiting on a caliper rebuild kit but in the mean time I am confused with all the tubes coming from the carbs. I have four gas lines two from the front of the carb and two from the rear. Where do they hook up? Which ones go to the petcock and which to the tank? That leaves one? HELP!!!

A couple problems I still have, I hooked up the choke and it appears to want more length to the cable because when it is seated the choke is already to it's fullest extension. Any idea what is wrong?

Sorry to sound sassy but sounds like you hooked up the cable wrong, or did something wrong in the carb assembly process.

Just in case you are unaware, there is a carb rebuild tutorial linked on the GSR Homepage, or though Basscliff's site... http://www.thegsresources.com/gs_carbrebuild.htm
You can also get an O-ring kit from cycleorings.com. It's critical to replace ALL the o-rings inside these carbs, including the ones on the intake pipe boots in order for the bike to run properly. Most newbies buy crappy aftermarket carb kits which do not have all the o-rings, plus the jets are often not specific to their particular bike although this is just a generalization, I'm not familar with your specific situation. Most newbies also don't soak their carbs in carb dip, they only take off the float bowls and spray out the bottoms and call it done.

Short cuts are long cuts when it comes to cleaning the carbs so please follow the proper procedure.

That's the throttle hook up, not the choke. Check the cable fit at the RH twist grip to make sure it's seated correctly.

I see some lovely "EPA" plugs still in place..... not good. You need to take those off and take them back apart and do a complete cleaning on them. In the photo you can see the plugs still in over the idle air screws, they need to come out to remove those. Take a small drill bit and poke a hole into the plug, being carefull to not hit the screw that is just underneith it. Then take a wood or sheet metal type screw and insert it into the hole in the plug and pull out the plug.

It's ALIVE!!!

Thanks in great part to all of you I worked on the old girl all afternoon and after putting her back together she started up and ran like a new one instantly!
