    first attempt at carb cleaning

Hi, I have a 82 gs450ga with mikuni bs34ss carbs. The bike sat for years but I finally got her running. It starts quickly and revs up perfectly but when in gear has little acceleration with no top speed. I checked the compression and both are good. When I cleaned the carbs I disassemble them and removed all the jets and soaked. I am new so I am thinking when I reassembled I screwed up. I keep seeing where some of the settings should be back off 1 or more turns. Not sure what to do. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hello, lets try to work our way through this with a few questions? Good work on the carbs. very straight forward following the tutorial. Did you replace or inspect the accelerator pump diaphram and check it to have a good spray into the throats. This has to be done has a bench test. Not at all certain that this is your problem but creates a symptom. Did you happen to drive this bike before it was left idle for a year? Was the oil changed and filter. Were there any problems with the petcock(leaking into the carbs)?Gas in oil? Trying to understand if it's engine/fuel or trans creating your problem? Bob

I've never seen a GS carb with accelerator pump. Is this unique to the 450A???

Best to start using the GS Resources Carb Rebuild Tutorial... http://www.thegsresources.com/gs_carbrebuild.htm

These instructions are for a different model but the carbs are basically the same. Also, make sure you replace all the O-rings with a kit from cycleorings.com including (very critical) the intake boot O-rings.

Don't short cut the cleaning process or you will be back into the carbs again.

Also again, these GS bikes won't run for crap without the airbox installed so don't even attempt to start the bike without it unless you are going to rejet the carbs for aftermarket pod filters.

      Good luck and keep going...

          SWEEEEEEEEET!!!

I now have a great carb option for a 400cc wheeler project I'm working on.

Here is a shot of the engine (inline-twin) that I'll be using, stolen from the net as mine is in the shop and last I checked last night, it was -9F in there, -23F outside...
