    Newbie Hello and... here it comes... Help!

    Hey whats up guys, I just want to introduce myself, names Russ and I live in central California. Land of smog and debt... I just bought an 83 GS850 for $350. It "kind of runs," when I bought it wasn't getting fuel, but cleaned out the tank and now it starts rough but wont idle really and runs like ****. So I did the research and figured you start with the intake O-Rings.



    So I just took of the carbs and didn't even see the slot for O-rings. Am I crazy? Or are they so old and just melted/gone? Thanks for the help. You guys on here seem very knowledgeable and am grateful for the advice.

    Just remove the black flat ring and you will see the light.

      Yep.. the black flat ring is/was the O ring.

        Got ya, thanks. So is this O-ring melted or is this stock? Either way I'm ordering some new ones right now!

            Go to cycleorings.com and order the set for your carbs and the intake/head

            Years of heat cycles lead to a non "O" ring like yours

            That float post leads to an "interesting" float height

            Use the Search feature about the float post - several people have fixes for that

            Also, go up to the GS Owners forum, post up an introduction and BassCliff will send you a mega welcome and a link to his site, which will keep you reading for a day or two.

              You could use a very small drill, and insert a pin into the shaft... use a epoxy glue to hold it all together.. should last a few years, but for a permanent repair, you would have to replace the carb body.

                Get some O rings from www.cycleorings.com

                Robert will give you the ones for the boots (who knows if that's stock, looks sort of oversized) plus all the ones you need for the carbs too. Stainless allen bolts are well worth it for the boots, some replace the ones on the carbs too. He sells the ones for the boots from memory.

                That post is a common problem cause by people trying to get the float pin out... Has it been repaired? You could drill the centre of both pieces & put some copper rod or similar in there & then glue with something that stands up to gas (not JB weld in my experience) or cross drill & pin it in place (I did the latter on a 550 & it worked out ok.

                The best fix is a replacement carb body - Chef1366 might have one you could use.

                        As JB Weld worked great for me over the years sitting in gas. It isn't a permanent solution as others have said though. Welcome to the club. Most everyone here is really, really cool.

                            I just cleaned it up and JB welded it. I talked to my dad and he said he's done it before for a petcock repair, and it worked fine... so we'll see, I'll keep you guys posted. Hmmm whatelse... I got the frame # "GS850-119089" but can't find the vin. It should be right on the steering stem right? I didn't even think about it when I bought the bike, and it just came with a bill of sale. Kind of odd...

                              That is the VIN number. They changed the format a year or 2 later.
