    bike lifting tips

    I've got an 82 1100g with a 4-1 exhaust and Im having trouble finding a simple way of jacking up the bike to work on it. No centre stand and the 4-1 exhaust makes the use of a motorcycle lift difficult. How have others got around this?

    If you have to leave the pipe on then you can usually find somewhere to jack it on the frame... I've even jacked mine on the stator & Magneto covers... front end doesn't weigh that much.

    You'll need two jacks, 1 for each side.

      If you've got anybody else around to hold the front, i just lift the back onto some car stands under the swingarm. If you need help, give me a yell, we musn't be far from each other.

        If you put some wood under the side stand first (about the size of ure hand and about 15 mm thick) to stand the bike more upright. Then get a trolly jack and use the center stand lugs/ muffler/ or just the rear bottom part of the frame to lift the bike up. Using the wood wil get the rear up high enough to slide the wheel out. To lift the front just use the front part of the frame where the lower engine mount is. Use a rag between the frame and jack for paint protection and some ocky straps/rubber bands around the front brake lever and throttle to stop the bike rolling forward when the rear is in the air. Side stand is more than strong enough for that.
