    ahhh threaded carb screws

working on my carbs tonight and should have used WD40 to loosen the screws

No, instead tried to force them and have managed to thread the head of one and broke a screw driver bit into the other one

    Oh joy

No, actually, you should have used a good penetrating oil on those screws.

Which screws? There could be different techniques to remove them.

Both rail screws, 8 big ones and the other smaller rail screws

I use an impact driver on those screws.

Shock and heat remove stuck threaded fasteners.

a center punch and a light hammer or a propane torch

ever heard of a J.I.S. type of phillips screwdriver?

it is different than a american phillips screwdriver. stanley sears etc...

american types "cam out" at a specific torque designed for wood screws.

The J.I.S. #2 is very necessary for medium metric machine screws

and use a #3 phillips on the big ones or you will get good at extracting stripped bolts.

I know I've said this before several times but it's worth a repeat: the bits on my Craftsman impact tool are fantastic. Seriously, the bits make all the difference. There were some screws I KNEW I was going to need an impact tool for, but I had no idea I wouldn't have to use the impact part - just those bits that came with it and good old wrist power. On one carb rail screw I had to cut a slot because of the way it was buggered (before I got there). All the rest came out with no impact. The only screws I used impact on were the bearing retainer screws due to the factory lock-tite. I'm a believer!

I agree wholeheartedly on the impact driver bits.

I automatically get the impact driver out when I need to take out some screws I have never had out before.
I try them by hand first, if that doesn't work, then the "love taps" with the hammer will happen.

Great info on the J.I.S +D.I.N. screwdrivers. What are the differences between the two? Which ones would you reccomend for working on my GS carbs? Thanks ahead for your help.

Do any Aussies now where to get the JIS screwdrivers or any brands available in AUS.

I really want to avoid the bill I just got from Action Thread reapairs to remove the 8 screws ($150) again

                      Ouch!

A hand impact driver is only about $50, much cheaper than a shop bill

The JIS bits have a deeper curve (not so tapered) like a Reed & Prince

I got my carb rack apart with a bit of penetrating oil and the 38 years old hand impact

                        unbelievable.

Get the carbs separated finally. manage to lose the connector hose between the carbs (does anyone have one) and then.....

Two more stuck screws on the carb top where the main jet lives.

This time I hit it with penatrating oil and try, nothing

                        Thread the screws again.

I will try to drill it and then use a screw extractor.
