dynatek ignition and new coil problem
HELP !!!!!!......i have a 79 gs 850, and i just replaced the points with a dynatek ignition. i also replaced the stock coils with the green ones (3ohms), new wires, and a new battery. the install seemed to go very well....i thought i did a hell of a job.....lol i am no mechanic, but i have done my share of tinkering around with cars and bikes but now i am lost. after the install was complete i tried to start the bike, and to my surprise there was no spark. i went over all of the wiring about ten times with the same result. i can tell there is no spark because on cilinder wires 1 and 4 i have the clear spark plug boots that you can see the spark when the bike is running...........now here is the weird part....after i tried to start the bike again(with no luck) i shut the key off and i noticed a flash in the spark plug boot. every time i turn the key to on, then off the boots get a spark...........could someone please send me in the right direction and tell me what i did wrong......this thing is making me crazy. Thanks!Tags: None -
That spark on shut down is a Dyna S quirk and nothing to worry about. Regarding your bike, did you install the rotor? One thing to check is the power into the signal generators. The coils are charging but not getting a proper signal from the signal generators to fire.Ed
To measure is to know.

It is a part that replaces the cam lobe that opens the points --under the right side ign cover. Tells the ign when to fire.
do you have the wiring diagram that came with the ign ? You can download it from their web siteComment

I had the exact same problem as you. I re-installed the Suzuki rotor instead of the Dyna one and no spark. I even sent the ignition system back to them for troubleshooting and it came back ok. Then it dawned on me that perhaps I should have put the new rotor in as well. Problem solved. The spark on shut down can get pretty exciting if you have been cranking for awhile.Comment

When you turn on the key the coil becomes energized and when you turn the key off the power is removed from the coil causing the electric field to collapse which makes the coil fire the plug. Basiclly this is how the ignition makes the spark just alot faster. If you didnt use the new rotor the ignition wont work because it has 2 magnets in it as they pass the new pickups they induce a current which causes the coils to fire. Good luckComment

Is the rotor the black piece with the notch on one side? If it is, i thank u...... And i feel like an a$$......lol i was wondering what that extra thing was and i could not figure it out. I'm gonna give it a try tomorrow and i will post the results. That sounds like it you remove the screw on the end of the shaft take off the stock 1 and put on the new 1, it may come with a new screw a hex drive then you do the static setup and you should be good to go. good luckIs the rotor the black piece with the notch on one side? wow.....when you actually read the istructions you can find alot of info in there. they reall don't touch on the rotor too much though. i was able to find out the info about the static test. THANKS AGAIN LUCABOND AND EVERYONE ELSE who has helped me out on this one. I LOVE THIS SITE!!!Comment

o.k. i installed the new rotor today and guess what.......spark!!!!!! i really appreciate all of the help from everyone. now i have another question that you all might be able to help me with. does anyone know if the gap on the plugs change with the new dyna ignition? if so does anyone know the proper setting. a friend of mine brought it up and it kinda makes sense but i does not say anything in the instructions. thanksComment
