    original paint work question

    Hi

It's looking a little ahead but I would like to give my project an original look.

the question I have is are the detailing on the tank of gs1000 and mudguard etc i.e the pin stripe. are they stickers or are they painted on?

    thanks

The detailing on my GS1000C, were stickers with a clear coat over them.

Reproduction Decals sells kits for many bikes, or you can use automotive pinstripe tape if the factory graphics scheme is simple.

There are lots of threads on this subject so you might want to try the Advanced Search feature (hint: use Titles Only) to turn up lots more information.

Agree with Ed on using Reproduction Decals you really can't go wrong. If you are loking to have the whole job done BK Custom Coatings does a fabulous job at a reasonable price.

As others have said, they are decals.

But I will further state that:
          - the two stripes (right next to each other) are both on one decal.
          - pretty much each year the two colors changed, even if the color of the tank/fender/ectera stayed the same from one year to next.
(or at least that is my experince from 650G, 850G & 1100G)

I have seen some good examples of someone replicating the stock look of the stripes using vyvnal tape. I understand it is a common item at automotive body shops or detail shops. Can get it in many sizes and colors. And there is a certain skill to knowing how to apply and especailly how to curve it and knowing how tight a curve can be made.

One place I have seen a good application of the vynal strips replicating the stock deacal was on front fender of the 850G I had for years (I told you about that didn't I Don?). Did not notice it till after I had the bike a few years. Was on the fender the two color stripes were individual stripes and the two stripes did not come together at a point in the same manner as did the two stripes elsewhere. But the color and size of the stripes matched the rest of the bike.

          .

I got my decals from the image works, based in the UK..
            they cost around £45 delivered..

click on bike graphics, then scroll down and click classic reproduction graphics..

There is a GS850 on there which would be similar. depending on what year yours is. (presuming 81)

              pin stripes

I found that the Sherwin-Williams automotive paint store has a catalog of pinstripes in colors, double, single, two color, three color...almost any combination you can imagine. They go on like the OE decals and you clear coat over them. The more exotic ones are special order but they have an amazing selection.

The stripes on my GS1000 are pinstripe, on my GS1100G are painted on. For the look and the work involved the pinstripes are the way to go.

(maybe any auto paint store has them, but that's who I deal with for now)
