valve adjustment
I'm planning on doing a valve adjustment on the winter project 450 soon. The service manual says to check gap for both exhaust and intake lobes perpendicular to cylinder head. But Basscliff instructions says to do exhaust parallel to the top of engine case and intake perpendicular. So which should I do? Thanks terryleeTags: None

I was involved in such a discussion a couple weeks ago (although relative to GS1100G, 2 valve per cyl). Was 3 of us that had differening ideas from past expereince. And were trying to work together on one bike. All I knew is what the factory manual said, which showed a diagram of lobes almost parrellel with the head, still above some, but definaitly not perpendicular. We check a few of the clearances at postion showed in book and also at perpendicular. Could not notice a difference with the feeler guages we had.
Maybe best to follow whichever manaul is more specific to your engine.

As I remember, BassCliff's guide pertains to the GS 850 and probably most other similar-sized 8 valve motors. Not sure about the 450.1983 GS 1100 Guided Laser

2000 Suzuki Intruder 1500, "Piggy Sue"
2000 GSF 1200 Bandit (totaled in deer strike)
1986 Suzuki Cavalcade GV 1400 LX (SOLD)
I find working on my motorcycle mildly therapeutic when I'm not cursing.

The 'sheet will work well for your engine, you just won't have to fill in all the boxes.

Hi Mr. terrylee,
Yes, the guide on my site is for an 8-valve engine. The twins are the same principle but a little different procedure. There is a video of the twin cylinder procedure. You can find the link on my site in the "Engine Odds and Ends" section. Or just click below...
Valve Adjustment Video: Kerry Burton of GStwin.com has put together a very informative video chronicling the process of valve adjustment on his GS500. The procedure will be the same for all GS twins. The principle is the same for all 2-valve per cylinder GS motors.
CLICK HERE to go to the Google video.
The video is very informative.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
