New Rings smoke"N"
How long is it normal for the engine to smoke after rebuild ? Blue oil burning smoke. When its cold and the choke is pulled. Around 3000RPM it puts up a good smoke screen. With the choke pushed down 2000RPM and below, no smoke. No smoke when I'm riding either. About 60 miles on it now. It's not cold blooded like the 500F the 500 has to warm for 3 or 4 minutes,or it ain't happy.[SIGPIC1980 GS1000E

Hi,
Doesn't it take two or three hundred miles for the rings to seat properly? Did you replace the valve seals too?
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff

This sounds more like a valve stem oil seal.
Did you check the ring gap when installing the rings?1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.

idea #1
the oil control rings are very thin if they are the 3 piece type.
Getting the upper and lower thin ring in the groove and having the center piece not overlap while installing the cylinders a very difficult task.
These rings can get hung up outside of the groove of the piston and the cylinder will still fit over it all seemingly normal.
HOWEVER it will smoke forever and the cylinder wall is ruined - USUALLY -
idea #2
the ring end gaps have gotten lined up and leaking that way
idea #3
Glazed cylinder walls.
idea #4
worn out cylinders with barrell shape and taper.
A leak down test will give you information where your problem is.SUZUKI , There is no substitute

Smoking
The smoke is more blue color than anything else. I had the Head and valves done at a shop. Guides, Seals and cylinders honed measured to be within tolerances. My bud. and I put the rings in, checked the gaps and all that. The smoke is only when I start it after it has a few days and when the choke is pulled all the way out its running around 3000RPM. When I close the choke down, at lower RPM's no smoke.[SIGPIC1980 GS1000E

Break in..
I had a GS hit my shop once that was smoking like a train and only had 2500 miles on it. I tore it down to find that the cylinders were glazed, it had never broken in correctly. Deglazed, new rings, and fired it up with a good 10 weight oil, brought it to temp, shut it down, drained oil, then topped it off with a good 10-40. I try to stay away from syn on breakins.. Drove it like I stole it (do not lug) and returned it to customer, saw it the other day, running strong, no smoke...
Getting a new set of rings to seat takes deccelleration as well as acceleration...And plenty of heat...
