Tach a bit loose
I wasn't sure if I should post this in his thread so I started a new one. I have the opposite problem that exbellicus has. With my tach, if I hold everything else constant(speed, rpm, etc) the needle will wobble +- 500 rpm.Tags: None

My red 78 750 did that for a while..I attributed it to maybe the clutch was slipping and then locking up and then slipping again. This went on for a while till suddenly there was no tach. Upon taking the tach cable off i saw that the casing was full of old hard solidified grease and grime and the fluctuation was from the cable dragging inside the housing, the stoppage all together was that it eventually snapped the cable itself down by where it goes in to the engine..MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

How would I know that it is specifically the clutch slipping? I haven't noticed any problems with the clutch, but what should I watch out for?

I noticed it when i was kicking it down to pass a car.. the rpms would scoot up and it didnt seem to be speeding up with as much UMPH i had expected.. I recently did the clutch and found all the plates had some shiney spots on them from when it had been slipping..much like you can "FEEL" a clutch slip in a stick shift car..if you know your machine you just can fel it..know what i am trying to explain?MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

Turn the tack upside down and let some oil soak into the connector. and lube the cable... If that doesn't fix it the only option is to replace it or cut it apart and clean & lube the mech..
