Dropped the parts off, have some ?s

Well, i dropped the parts off last saturday and i'm gonna get the motor back soon after he rebuilds it with the new parts. What i was wondering is, how do you install rings on a piston and how do you do the cam chain timing? Is there a notch on the cam shaft that you have to line up with another notch on the motor? Or, do you have to set the tensioning while the bike is running? For the rings, can you just put them on by hand? or, do you need a special tool to compress them as well? I'm thinking about rebuilding the motor myself. Its really another 150 dollars i do not want to spend on that bike...

    Thanks guys,
    KT

Rings can usually be put in the bores by using your fingers, but you can use hose clamps as compressors, if necessary. If you do use hose clamps, just be sure you don't scratch the pistons when you put them on and take them off.

The procedure for setting your cam timing is explained in rather nice detail in your service manual. If you don't have a manual, don't even think of putting the engine together. Basically, you set the crank to a certain mark that is on the right end, at the ignition pick-up. Then you set the exhaust cam in place, making sure it lines up to the right marks. Then the intake cam is set into place and the correct number of pins in the cam chain are set between the marks on the two cams.

Do NOT run the engine to set the timing or the tension.

As I said, it's all explained in the manual. If you don't have a manual, just fork over the $150 to have someone else do it.

      +100 on that one Steve.
TK, once you learn about rings and timing (marks) you'll wonder what all the fuss was about.
Get a manual, or just pay the $150.
      Phil.

          "M"kay?

Does that mean anything like the traditional "O"kay?

Sorry, it's just another new term with which I am not acquainted.

That explains it. I have only seen one episode, and that was only because it was recommended here.
It was the episode about Harley riders. I will admit that episode was amusing, but I generally don't care for the show.
