650g Driven hub assembly advice needed

I pulled the rear wheel off my 650G today to have the tires changed and as everyone has told me I checked the driven hub assembly. It's hard to see in the photos but only the last 1/8" of the gear/spline has any profile. Thanks to all for insisting I check. I thought they were fine untill I decided to remove it from the wheel and look closer. The portion on the swing arm still has teeeth on it.

Do any of you have any of words of wisdom or advice for me on this repair? I know that the Honda grease is recomended.

They want a pretty penny for the replacement. I looked at Alpha and Parts Shark. Will have to wait on the tires and part for a while.

Good that you pulled it out of wheel to inspect.

Only repair is to replace it. Best price I found on a new one a couple years ago was just over $100. Only other option to buying a new one is to find one on ebay in a wheel yet (are all the same fit I think) but you dont want another 82 or 83 one.

And find some moly paste that is the 60% like most Honda dealers have. SOme of the other moly grease is only like 3%.

Lots of info can be found here on GSR. Search for "rear hub" or "rear spine" which is what most people call it. I think the only place that see it called "joint assembly" is in the parts fische.

Question: I have never had to look up the splines on a parts fiche before, so am unsure of the terminology.

Is it the item found on the Rear Wheel page, item #15, called JOINT ASSY, DRIVEN, Suzuki part number 64680-45112?
If so, Cycle Parts Nation has them for $45.90.

Yup, that's the part (it's usually #14 on the diagram, though). It's the same on all Suzuki shafties up to 1100 CC, even the C50 and S50 cruisers still in production. (The M109 mega cruiser uses a different part.)

That part number has actually been superceded by an improved part, 64680-45113.

$45 is a hell of a price -- order it quick before they discover the error.

Thanks guys. I jumped on that price. With shipping in came to $69.00. You saved me fifty bucks (at least!) and I probally wouldn't have gotten it for a month or so. Thanks for the b-day present.

Please let us know if they have a mysterious adjustment to the price by the time you get your part.

Nice to see that three of the vendors were in the same range, though, at $45-52. Most of the rest of them were double that, then Bike Bandit just a little higher, then Alpha, way above everyone else.

I have notice this trend with all the shopping I had to do for "Freebie". Yes, I actually made a spreadsheet and did all the shopping, then went with the lowest overall price, so I got to see who had parts for the lowest prices. It wasn't the same vendor all the time, so you still have to shop around.

Cost to go get it (including two meals for three guys and gas for the van): about $100
(or was that two tanks for the van and gas for three guys? )

Parts to put it all together: $593.36.

Title fee in oHIo is $11.

Tags are $43.86

Total: just under $750.

I think the only thing not accounted for is the bottle of brake fluid.

I see that part in Alpha but in the diagram its not showing both the silver and black. So with that part number which one are you getting ?

If you buy a new one, it will be an updated one, so no worries about getting a 'soft' one.

By the way, in case you hadn't caught on by now, look all you want at Alpha, but they are the most expensive place to buy from.

I case your interested, I bought my 650g in July of last year and spent the following:
Bike ---------------------$250.00
Reristration and transfer---$104.00
6 months insurance-------$97.00

Misc parts, oil, ect--------$618.25

Total to date-------------$1071.25


Still probally needs new battery and or electrical system work. I didn't include the 8 hours I spent driving, food or gas to pick it up in Reno. I'm happy but it's not cheap. The bike is all there. Good stock pipes. Newish seat cover came with the bike and tires are about 80%, made in 2006. Tank is dent free but the clearcoat has spider web cracking from the sun.
