Whats inside my master cylinder?
I just opened the master cylinder up and it was pretty much bone dry. There is also a gunk kinda like Gum all on the bottom. Is there anything inside ths thing besides the fluid or am i missing parts? can i just clean this out and fill it up with brake fluid? Thanks for the info guys! -

That grey stuff is epoxy putty and likely its stopping a leak. I think you might want to find another master cylinder. It looks a little worse for wear. The fluid is not clean either.
You should also clean you lines and calipers as I'll bet they are nasty too.
Brakes are important, duh, so you need to keep them serviced. Make sure your fluids are changed at least every 2 years, keep the fluid levels up, make sure your calipers are working correctly and your pads are in spec. You never know when you'll really need them.
Clean things up and keep yourself safe.
Cheers,

doesnt look good..and did you notice the crack in the cover?? that will let moisture in and brake fluid is like salt in the fact that it actually draws moisture to itself...might be time to lookfor a whole new setup..at least i think i would ..MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

Ditto Spyug. That looks a bit bodged and if I were you I'd find a replacement. What bike by the way - I don't recognise that MC?79 GS1000S

Its a 79 GS1000 I picked it up for 700 bucks about 2 days ago. Im pretty sure it was rigged up, Im not riding until the brakes are fixed it but it does run pretty decently. Im not sure if that MC is even original. Whats a good price for a new one?

Take that POS master off your bike and depost in the nearest trash can. If your bike has dual disc brakes look for a 5/8" (16mm) master, or a 14mm master for a single disc brake.
Used masters are a crap shoot since the aluminum bore is often corroded which means the master is junk. Partsnmore.com sells a couple of different new masters but some of them come with different mirror threading so that can be a pain.
Good luckEd
