    Oil level window

Does anyone know if the oil level window on the 70's gs pop out of the case or if they are pressed in and can't be removed! I have a 77 gs 550 and need to replace it!
    Thanks

they will just press out although you will be lucky if you dont break it in the process. you can buy them new from suzuki but i used a kawasaki one in my cover. cheaper and easier to see the level

why do you need to replac`e it? Is it all brown and cloudy? If this is the case, fill the lens cavity with some denatured alcohol and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Then using several Qtips go thrun the slots in the metal retainer and scrub the scum off the lens... this usually clears them right up as i have done three this way and they are all crystal clear now.

The window is plastic and turns cloudy with age on some bikes, maybe the ones that sit outside in the UV light? If that's the case the easiest thing to do is replace the window with a new one. If you search in the forum you can find threads detailing the process and the part number of the window, since the part is not easy to find in the parts fishe from what I've been told (haven't looked myself).

How 'bout the little window in the brake fluid reservoir?

Not to change the subject, but can you also replace the little sight window on the front brake fluid reservoirs??

                  Here's the Suzuki part:

                  LENS, OIL LEVEL CHECK
                  11971-45010
                  $8.67 at Partshark.com.

You'll need the clutch cover gasket as well, of course. The same "lens" was used on pretty much all GS models with a sight glass.

The lens is indeed made of glass (surrounded by rubber, like a seal), and usually cracks upon removal. I normally use a couple of sockets and a large vise to press in the new one slowly. Easy-peasy!

If the old one is just dirty, they're easy to clean once you have the clutch cover off.

The usual reason for replacement is painting or polishing the clutch cover.

The sight glass on brake master cylinders is plastic, and turns yellow, deteriorates, etc.

Its 11971- 45010. £7.13 at Crooks Suzuki (I just checked). probably that price in $ in the US.

Edit: Brian beat me to it and I was very nearly right about the price.

Yes, you can. It's not available as a separate part, but I have used some 1/8" Lexan and some epoxy. You can find Lexan in various thicknesses at Lowe's or Home Depot, in the window section. Just cut it to a square about the right size, then grind and file it into a circle that will fit into the hole with just a little room to spare. Mix up some quick-set epoxy, spread some around the ledge, drop the Lexan disk into place, then put some more epoxy around the edge, sealing it in place. Let it cure overnight, then put it back on the bike.

If the usual reason to replace the sight window is for painting and yet you are able to clean it using q-tips and denatured alcohol (or can I also use rubbing alcohol or windex?), why not just tape it off to keep paint from getting on it? Unless you are going to throw it in an oven I guess?
