why do you need to replac`e it? Is it all brown and cloudy? If this is the case, fill the lens cavity with some denatured alcohol and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Then using several Qtips go thrun the slots in the metal retainer and scrub the scum off the lens... this usually clears them right up as i have done three this way and they are all crystal clear now.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

The window is plastic and turns cloudy with age on some bikes, maybe the ones that sit outside in the UV light? If that's the case the easiest thing to do is replace the window with a new one. If you search in the forum you can find threads detailing the process and the part number of the window, since the part is not easy to find in the parts fishe from what I've been told (haven't looked myself).Ed

You'll need the clutch cover gasket as well, of course. The same "lens" was used on pretty much all GS models with a sight glass.
The lens is indeed made of glass (surrounded by rubber, like a seal), and usually cracks upon removal. I normally use a couple of sockets and a large vise to press in the new one slowly. Easy-peasy!
If the old one is just dirty, they're easy to clean once you have the clutch cover off.
The usual reason for replacement is painting or polishing the clutch cover.
The sight glass on brake master cylinders is plastic, and turns yellow, deteriorates, etc.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

If the usual reason to replace the sight window is for painting and yet you are able to clean it using q-tips and denatured alcohol (or can I also use rubbing alcohol or windex?), why not just tape it off to keep paint from getting on it? Unless you are going to throw it in an oven I guess?Cowboy Up or Quit. - Run Free Lou and Rest in Peace
