re-packing baffle

took my baffle out today and found little material left. i did some looking around on the net and found a guy who uses stove rope (the rope used to repair door seals on wood stoves).

he had pix where he clamped an end of the rope at one end of the baffle, wrapped it tightly and clamped off at the other end. no other material was used. he says the sound is good and after little over a year, there has been no sign of deterioration.

anybody else use this method? a 5/8" x 7' piece of this rope is only 10 bucks at tractor supply. probably enough to do 2-3 baffles. cheap fix if it works. i'm inclined to pick up some and try.

That rope is dense so it will not absorb as much sound as a looser baffle material. I suggest using FMF baffling... http://www.bikebandit.com/exhaust-accessories/c/a643648

Steel wool or fiberglass packing material intended for mufflers. I paid 15 bucks for enough fiberglass to do two mufflers.

If cost is the issue, try this long strand fiberglass packing material. I used it to re-pack my Wolf muffler, and then encased the packing with some aluminum fine screen sold in sheets at Home Depot/Lowe's for windows, for a few bucks (this is optional). Wrap a piece of wire around it, to hold everything in place and install....should sound better, and last a few years.

i saw the fmf material ranging from 10-30 bucks. i assume the 10 buck version will do?

Whatever you use, if you dont ride far enough to dry out the moisture it will lead to rotted out pipes, especially if the pipe angles up.

I bought stainless steel wool from Two Brothers to repack my muffler. When I took the muffler apart, it had NO packing left in it. After putting in the stainless steel wool, it has a great tone, not too loud, but great. I expect that the stainless steel wool to last longer than fiberglass. Regular steel wool would rust and blow out too fast.

mine looked like what little packing was left had all bunched up at the back end, leaving most of the baffle uncovered. i'm expected a huge chnage in sound and performance!!

You most likely won't get a performance increase, just a slight decrease in noise.

let me re-phrase. maybe better carb performance with lower air flow. bike runs good and i just rebuilt the carbs completely, so i hope the combination of that with a lower airflow in the exhaust will make her run great.

I've always used fiberglass. I tape it nice and tight with masking tape.
I've never tried it as packing but steel wool is coated in a preservation oil to prevent it from rusting.
