Coil mod with ignition switch
Hello, i have searched this forum for hours trying to find an answer. If its here, i can't find it. I want to use the relay mod with a universal keyed switch, with a seperate starter button. So do i run hot (battery) to 30 or key ignition on to 30. Any help would be appreciated. In other words, not using on off switch.Tags: None

I found this article useful:
From the article:
-30 = constant [positive (+)] power (usually wired directly to car battery)
-85 = coil ground (wired to the negative (-) battery terminal or any grounded metal panel in the car)
-86 = coil power (wired to the control source. could be a switch, or it could be the car's IGN or ACC circuit.)
-87 = switched [positive (+)] power output. (when the relay coil is powered, lead/pin 87 is connected to lead/pin 30)
-87a = [on 5 lead/pin relays only] this lead/pin is connected to lead/pin 30 when the coil is NOT powered.
In the above article, don't confuse 'coil ground', and 'coil power' with that of your ignition coils. It's referring to inside of the relay itself - this is an electromagnet switch.
To answer your question, 30 is the + battery connection (use a fuse here). Your key switch will connect to 86 and 85 will be connected to ground. *Note, you'll need to supply power to your key switch! Then 87 will be the power to your ignition coils.
So, when 86 and 85 make a loop (when the key switch is ON), 30 will be bridged with 87 supplying power to the ignition coils. When the key switch is off, the 30 to 87 bridge will be broken (removing power to the ignition coils).Last edited by Guest; 02-15-2010, 12:12 PM. Reason: Added the note regarding the need to have the key switch powered
