82 GS650GL Revving up on its own

I just got a GS650GL that has been sitting outside for about a year, I cleaned the carbs and got it to crank but when it starts it starts to rev up on its own. If I give it any throttle it cuts out. Anyone have ideas what might be causing this problem?

I've been having the same problem with my bike.

Coming from a newbie, this is what I would recommend checking in this order.

    1. When you say clean, did you dip and replace all o-rings, check your needles/seats/floats, or did you just give them some carb spray?
If the latter, I would recommend a good dip for your first step. O-rings can be found from Robert at cycleorings.com

    2. My problem seemed to be my diaphragm not sealing correctly, and the slide was getting stuck, so another one is being shipped to me.

    3. Airbox. Does your bike still have the airbox connected and have you checked to see if the air filter is good & clean. If the airbox has been replaced with pods, or is not sealed, you will have issues.

    4. I would look into valve adjustments. I'm sure bikecliff will be along shortly to post his welcome, which has great information for carb dipping and valve adjustments.

    5. Where are you located, there may be some nearby GSers that can assist you

Good luck, take lots of pictures and keep us posted! BikeCliff will surely be along shortly to welcome you to the forum.

Most likely reason is intake boot O-rings allowing an air leak. Good excuse to rebuild the carbs and replace all the o-rings with parts from cycleorings.com

Yep, both of the previous replies are right on.

CLEAN the carbs. DIP them, don't just spray them.

Give them new o-rings, they will reward you for that.

Exbellicus, that vendor list looks vaguely familiar.
