brake caliper question

79 GS850. Had the front end pulled apart, she's all back together and running fine..except....When I torque up the axle nut to spec it pulls the right side caliper too close to the disc, so close it rubs. I double and triple checked that all the spacers are placed correctly, right way round and all that, washers where they are supposed to be and everythings else. Any ideas? The only thing I don't know is, there are two spacers that look identical, one for each side, but maybe they are not identical in length?

Have you tried pulling the brakes on hard several times and releasing? They might sort themselves out.

yes did that. Cleaned up both calipers while I had it apart, both are working fine. It just doesnt' seem right that the caliper is soooo close to the disc. The left side has a good 8mm distance roughly, more than enough anyways.

you are pulling it into a bind. first tighten the axle and then loosen one of the lower pinch cap on the axle. you hold the brake and compress the suspension a couple time and then tighten the axle pinch back up and- bling! axle-wheel-brakes - aligned, some time the whole fork assy needs to be loosened and upper tubes spun in the trees too. but the axle alignment is the last thing to do after any front end reassembly.

I would swap the spacers side to side..

Sounds like one of the spacers is in the wrong place, they should be the same distance from the rotor on each side.

So I checked the spacers, the outer spacer on the right side needed to be put in the opposite way the manual shows. Fixed the problem of the caliper being too close but the bike is making a new noise. When the bike is in motion there is a rubbing noise from the front end. I can't figure out what is causing the noise. There are no signs of anything rubbing anywhere. I can't reproduce the noise with the bike stationary. I took the speedo cable off thinking that was it, nope. I did the axle alignment but it didn't make any difference, maybe I did it wrong. Any thoughts?

Jack the front wheel off the ground, spin the wheel and check the noise to see where it is coming from. Which side of the wheel.

No I can't duplicate the noise. When I put the front wheel up she spins fine, no noise at all.
