    Thanks guys. Most interesting.

The battery did come with acid in 6 individual cells and it buttons up tight when the acid is poured in. So that might make it AGM then?

I re-read all the literature and can't find any refernce to it. All it says is maintenance free.

Maybe if i look up the serial numbers it will tell me more.

    Cheers,
    S.

Yes, you have an AGM battery.

Batteries that come sealed from the factory are normally gel batteries. Another indicator of a gel battery is a marking that it can be mounted in any position.

Bottom line is that both work great and won't puke acid on your nice clean irreplaceable vintage bike.

So ride happy and stop worrying about the very minor technical differences.

You just watch - now that I've said that I bet that battery will be dead when I go to start the bike in a couple of weeks .

True, "gel" batteries can be mounted in any position, but if you read the Wikipedia quote that I posted, you will see that "regular" AGM batteries can be mounted in any position, too. I have seen some that said "can be used in any position except upside down", though.

Whatever Wikipedia says, the last several AGM batteries I've encountered have not mentioned mounting in any position. It's probably more because the ones I've used are the kind you fill and then tap in a plastic cap.

In other words, whatever the chemistry, unless it's factory sealed, they probably don't want you mounting the battery on its side for obvious reasons.

Gel or AGM, they work great and I don't miss vent tubes one bit!
