Same year, different engine. Will it work?

Ok so I have a 1980 gs750lt. I cant find anywhere to answer this question.

Can I use the fuel tank from another GS of the same year? for example a 1980 gs1100lt?

The parts cross reference tip I got and have been using will only show the tank that is supposed to be on the bike, it wont cross reference just what fits, it only deals with the same part numbers.

I am going to guess "NO". The only 1100L that was available in '80 was the 16-valve model. Is your 750 an 8- or 16-valve engine? Not sure why the engine would affect the shape of the gas tank, but I can understand there might be differences in the frames for the two different engines.

so then would i be right to assume that the tank mounting tabs and everything are the same just the tank design is different? I.E. the frame is basically the same just a different size engine....

Im having trouble locating a tank so Im trying to find my options if I can use a different model tank Im fine with that since this isnt a restoration project.

            Hey Eric,

I found this while looking on ebay. The title of the auction says chain guard but the picture and description are for a 1980 GS750 gas tank. It looks like its in excellent condition. The BIN is $149 which is an excellent price since it looks like you don't have to repaint it. Look here
