    electrical wiring help

Hello all. Since my bike came with VM29 carbs but only a single cable set up I purchased a throttle assembly from a 1997 Bandit. I am now trying to get the wiring set up properly. I think I have it pretty much figured out except for one wire (W/R) that I cannot see how to connect. I would appreciate any input anyone could provide.

    Thanks,

    Raz

What does W/R go to on the bandit? Are you using a Bandit harness on a GS850?

EDIT: W/R is one of the wires to gang the Stator loop through the left hand light switch. Most people leave that out when wiring the stator directly to the R/R.

Not sure how that is coming up in what you are trying to do.

Please pardon my ignorance, but is the Bandit fuel injected? I see a throttle position sensor in the schematic, but no pump or injectors, so I don't know.

Other than that, what's to convert? Carbs don't have wiring. Moving carbs from one bike to another should not require any rewiring.
If the Bandit has fuel injection, though, you can't simply move the "throttles", you will need to do a LOT of fabricating and adapting.

Oh, the color comparison chart you provided doesn't really mean much.
What's REALLY important is to know the function of each of those wires.
For example: What's at each end of the GS White wire? There is one white wire that goes to a coil, and another that powers the brake light switches. Which one you talking about?
How about the White/Green wire? After a (very) brief search, the only White/Green wire was a stator wire.
Similar things will happen with the other colors. Colors don't matter, electrons are blind. Besides, it's dark inside the wire, they can't see the color, anyway. What you need to know is the function of the wire, then find what color is being used on that bike.

I just looked over the schematic that was posted and did not see a W/R wire on the Bandit.

That is why I asked for function, not color.

I'm trying to use the RIGHT and LEFT controls from the Bandit on the GS850. So I'm trying to figure out how to wire the Bandit controls onto the GS850. The 'conversion chart' I posted was the way I think I should connect the switches from the Bandit to the GS850 wiring harness.

OK if you are trying to use left and right controls the W/R should be left out as that is the previously described function.

The question would have been clearer if you had stated you were looking to swap controls not swap carbs

                Yeah, my thoughts, exactly.

Still, the best way to handle that is to expand your little color chart with a column on each end. Identify the GS white wire, label its function. Find the same function on the Bandit, identify its color. Continue until you are done.

Well don't be too hard on yourself, you did a unusally good job of defining the problem by providing both schematics. You just got lost in the details a little .

I have done this swap. I used Bandit controls on my 80 gs1100. Wiring should be very similar if not the same. I can check tomorrow and post how i did it if you would like.

I switched to a GSXR left hand control and did it without the diagram for the Gixxer. Just used a multimeter and checked for continuity on all the switch wires to see what did what then connected the switch to the 700 wires.

Gee, sounds a LOT like something else that was posted recently.

You want to show me where you recommended using a meter and checking for continuity on the switch? I don't seem to see it. It may sound a LOT like it but not really.

Sorry, I only said to find the function on one bike, identify the color of the wire then do the same on the other bike.
I did not specify how to do that. I promise to try harder next time.
