    GS500 carbs on GS450?

Have K&Ns and a Mac exhaust on the 450. Existing carbs are borderline crap. Would GS500 carbs work?

Ok, current carbs are beyond borderline crap. They are now in Websters as an illustration next to the word "crap".

Any thoughts about using the GS500 carbs on this GS450? Would be nice to get some carbs only a few years old as opposed to +20.

Still have the K&Ns but have changed the muffler to a stock unit from a GSXR1000.

    Thanks,
    Kurt

You may already know this: Once you change the air filter system and/or the exhaust system, all bets are off. The flow rate of air is absolutely critical for the CV carbs on a GS450. You might try experimenting with different main jet sizes in the carbs. It will take considerable amount of trial-and-error before you get it right, regardless of which carb you use.
Of course, all the above assumes you've meticulously inspected and cleaned the carbs. I've cleaned and rebuilt two GS450s (mine and and my friends). It took many tries on both to work out all the carb bugs - air leaks, faulty air filter and/or air box, partially clogged passages, huge exhaust leaks, leaking floats, worn needle jets, etc, etc. - Unless you've verified that none of these issues are a factor, you're potentially going to waste a boat-load of time and effort.

The current carbs on the bike are garbage, the one on the left in particular. Float, needle and seat, etc.. It would cost way more in parts to fix than what I would pay to get a set of 3 or 4 year carbs from a GS500 off Ebay, thus my question. I can get another set of 20 year old carbs, but if newer ones will work...

        Thanks,
        Kurt

It should work fine. The 500 was just a natural progression of the 450. The 2003 models come with 33mm Sligshot carbs. They may have been fitted earlier than that. If money is no object check these out, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2455829432. Keep in mind they come with about $60 in filters. Shipping is low too.

Nice. Unfortunately, money is indeed an object on this bike. I may give a set of stock GS500 carbs a try...I can always put them back on Ebay if it doesn't work out.

            Thanks,
            Kurt

You gotta love that GS twin. Long after the 4s have been mothballed that motor lives on, good news for 450 owners it looks like. And just when we thought the GS500 was gone for good it's back with a full fairing! Yeah!!

Wow, if anybody sees a squid riding around on a new GS500 be sure to yoink the carbs for me. I'll pay cash if you get the exhaust too. 8) It should be all bolt on for me.

Been doing a little research over at gstwins.com and things don't look hopeful. Evidently the exhaust ports on the 500 are different from the 4s, and they exit straight out into where our frame's downtubes are located. The intakes are also farther apart, which I think could be worked around with some custom carb brackets and another fuel tube. I think
