Crash! And I think the Falcon's hurt as bad as me.

    Hey fellas,

Bad news, I laid my GS down yesterday - was trying to execute a controlled stop after a pothole upset the suspension badly on the highway, but hit the ground probably still moving around 15-20mph.

I'm very fortunate not to have high-sided, and my helmet probably saved my life, my leather saved a lot of my skin, and I came out with 4 broken ribs, scrapes and bruises. I feel very very fortunate.

My bike, while also not too bad at first glance, seems to be a cautionary tale for case guards.

Like I said, I'll tell the story, but I wanted to post this pic and see if you guys could tell me:
    1.) Is my crankshaft bent?
2.) If so, can it be fixed?

    Thanks guys!

    Hey Josh!

Oh Man! This is terrible news, but I'm glad you're not too banged up.

I'm not sure what to make of your bike. More pictures may be in order. If you put them in your Picasa album then you can post up full size pictures.

You take it easy for a while and heal up, OK? I hope and pray you get better quickly.

All the best to you and yours,

    Cliff

The mechanical spark advance mechanism is bent but that's easily replaceable. You are also going to need a new set of signal generators but those shouldn't be hard to find either. Looks like minor damage if that's all that happened.

If you hit the pothole that hard you might want to check out the swingarm bolt. When my bike was fairly new I hit a big one too. At some point I was checking the torque on the bolt and found out it had snapped. The only thing I could think of that would have caused that was the impact from the pothole.

i dont think your crank is bent i did similar damage to one of my 1000 engines in a lowside i took the ignition right off
i replaced the advancer and the ignition and the cover and it fired right up and ran fine
you'll know if it's bent as soon as you fire it up
good luck and i'm glad your not to busted up

The crank is pretty robust I would say it is not bent. You may have trouble getting the advance unit off But easy to replace

Thanks all for the quick and encouraging responses!

I'm resting up at the moment, and my wife wisely had my father-in-law bring the bike to his house (otherwise I'd have been out there fiddling with it already instead of laying low like I should be).

Definitely hurting worse today than yesterday, which was predicted by pretty much everyone.

Hopefully. I'll get over to the in-laws' garage this weekend and see if I can get those electrical parts off for a better assessment and more pics. Thanks a million, Chef - I'll be in touch with you about that signal generator, and Piester, I'm wondering if your right side turn signals or mirror survived the wildlife run-in. For that matter, I'm glad you survived the wildlife run-in - you already told that story on GSR?

Plus some random encouraging news. A buddy has offered to loan me his Jeep Wrangler while I recover, which is a big deal since the bike has been my only vehicle (aside from the Missus' van) for years now. Sadly, from what I'm reading about broken ribs, the bike will be ready to ride before I will.

Praying for you... take your time... the bike will wait.

i can look around. i dont believe i have any signals. i may have a set of buel mirrors you can use. rest up and dont worry about the bike at all. itll be there when your better. not that your going to listen haha. as far as my accident im mostly healed. im gonna end up needing knee surgery and they are going to have to repair a muscle rip in my chest by my heart. the wrists and shoulder will be fine. ribs are a different story thow. i have broken a few in my life and it is never fun. they can be very scary. no one wants a rib stabbing through their lung. try and pm me a list of parts thatll work off of my bike and ill get back to you with what i have.
