Yes, they made a 750G and a 750GL, but they kept them all in Japan.

I can check my factory exhaust from my 1982 GS 850 L, removed from the bike and stored in the garage.
I never noticed if the center hole was open or not.
My bike currently has a Vance and Hines 4 into 1 exhaust on it.

My L exhaust is original with the center hole closed. They must have changed the look after 1980.

I kinda like the way the 850GL sounds, actually. I like quiet bikes, but the 850G is verrrrrrrry quiet. The GL has a little rip to it, but it's not obnoxious.

Did you have any mounting issues, or was it pretty much bolt-on?

And what in the world is that spray can of canola oil for?

Thanks Brian. I value your opinion. I haven't started the bike yet so I don't know what sound to expect. Your words make me think I won't hate the sound of the exhaust.

There were no mounting issues at all, bolted right on. I've got all new exhaust gaskets just in case there are any leaks.

And what in the world is that spray can of canola oil for?
The canola oil was the lubricant I used to press in the bushings on the rear shocks. I don't know why, just a crazy idea I had. It worked great.

Just gonna add a little curiosity to the thread with the hope of not hijacking it.

I took some pics of the exhaust on my '81 850G because they are nothing like any of the megaphone exhausts pictured. My 450L has the open center hole with the plate behind the outer ones. Now I do not know if the system is the one that came on the bike from factory, but if you can see on my crappy cell phone pics, the stampings do say they are from Suzuki and specifically for the 850. Maybe ya'll can shed some light on them and I just thought I would provide another example of an 850G exhaust.

Those are the regular 850G pipes, the ones in question are the L model 850 pipes.

Ok, that is what I thought, but I couldn't find any other decent pics of factory G model pipes. The only reason I brought this up was because he mentioned the L pipes bolting up no problem and since Ls are the only thing I have messed with before I got my G I kinda assumed (obviously wrongly) that all GS megaphones were that same style. Thanks

                      Hi Mr. WesV,

I know, it's a long thread to read all the way through.

I had to replace the exhaust on my 1980 GS850G because of an accident. One of the generous members here gave me his old exhaust from a 1980 GS850GL because he had replaced his with a 4-n-1. The exhaust on my bike now is actually an GS850GLT exhaust. And I think I'm going to like it.

As far as the open center hole question, I have it on good authority that this is, indeed, the stock configuration for the 1980 version of the 850L exhaust. I don't know why it was changed for other models and years.

                      Thank you for your indulgence,

                        Cliff,
I have no doubt that with all the members that come and go on here you don't remember me, but I certainly remember you, your accident and all that Jessie has gone through to get to this point. I have a bad habit of lurking for 6-8 months at a time without posting and then spend 2 weeks posting actively and have been doing it this way since '03 when I originally joined.

I read through the whole thread (twice as a matter of fact so I could be sure I had all the info right) but I was still in confusion over the stock pipes and I apologize for hijacking the thread for the past several posts.

                          Hi Mr. WesV,

Sure, I remember seeing you around from time to time. You've been around here a lot longer than I have.

And I didn't mean to imply that you were a "Johnny-come-lately". I'm sorry if it seemed that was the case. I was just trying to clear up any confusion. Don't worry about the "threadjack". I took no offense. It's not really "my" thread. I just started it. I don't mind sharing, no, not one little bit.
