Sort of jump starting from another dedicated good battery question

    Hi

i am using another good car battery (not connected to any cars/bike/etc) to start my Gs650 which has dead battery.

Is this going to break/stuff/wreck anything.

I have been checking previous posts and (oops) other websites that say it is ok and others that say it is bad.

Does anyone have a definitive answer.

I know I need to buy a new bike battery, but I am doing it this way to check for other issues starting the bike. This way I do not buy a new bike battery and drain it whilst trying to diagnose my starting issues, wait for it to recharge and then drain it again.

Make sure Red + is Red, and Blk - is Blk . Does not hurt to double check....

As others have said, this is fine.

A possible reason for the cautions on other websites is that it can be bad to use a car battery in a RUNNING automobile to jump start most motorcycles.

The cars charging system will keep the car at its charging voltage.
If this voltage is set slightly higher than the bikes charging voltage, the voltage regulator in the bike will attempt to regulate it down.
There are diodes in the regulator/rectifier which will prevent it from actually being able to regulate it, but the control circuitry in the regulator section will turn full on (and stay full on) trying to make it regulate.
Depending on the design of the control circuit, this may damage the voltage regulator in the bike.

This could happen in less than a second, and in many cases (including the GSs) the R/R is connected to the battery even if the ignition key is off, so even charging it with the key off can damage the regulator.

Further, the danger is not just a running car ... jump starting from a running motorcycle can do it too ... as could a too powerful "plug it in the wall" fast charger.

Automobiles use a different type of regulator, which is apparently not as sensitive to this failure mode, so the above cautions don't typically apply to them.

I've heard some guys over-think this set-up because of the CA/CCA of the car battery or the alternator of the car. You can un-think it because of current dividers going on with what's in ll with the battery, r/r, etc.

BL? you're fine, like everybody said
