1981 vs. 1985 GS650GL Speedometer
I have an '81 GS650GL...my speedo goes up to 80mph...I recently saw an '85 GS650GL with a speedo that goes up to 140 mph...why's this? Does the '85 have a 6th gear or something? Or more power?Tags: None

Back then the U.S. gummint mandated that all new vehicles sold in the U.S. of A. had a speedometer that read no more than 85 mph. The reasoning was something on the order of - If ya don't know how fast you are going you get bored and can't brag about how fast your car/motorcycle is: therefore you won't try to go over 85. That particular mandate was as effective and as popular as the Prohibition Act. Luckily politicians came as close to their senses as they ever get and withdrew the requirement.
