How to fill GS1150 tank quicker?

I have an '84 GS1150EF, and I always have to trickle in the last 2 litres or so (that's about 1/2 gal to you guys in the USofA) into the gas tank. I think this is due to the absence of some sort of California clean fuel thing or something. In any case, once the tank is 'full', the remaining fuel just dribbles in slowly, there is one little vent hole which allows the air to escape. If I go too fast, it spills over into the overflow hole. As a result, if I want a tank full right to the top, it takes me about 5 minutes.

My question: is there any mod or has anyone tried anything to allow them to fill the tank right to the top quickly?

you are not suspose to fill it all the way to the top, they put that neck in there do discourage filling to the top, you need room for expansion of the gas.
when gas comes out of underground storage tanks it is at about 70*F, you put it in a motorcycle gas tank sitting on top of a nice hot 200*F plus engine and it will expand considerably, if the tank is too full it eather presurizes the tank, (not good) or spills out past the vent or cap gasket and runs down the sides of the tank onto you or the hot engine. (very very bad)

Good tip. I guess this is never an issue for me because the only times I fill it right up to the top is when I'm about to hit the road, and don't stop until I;ve burned off a couple of litres anyway, so maybe why I've never had a spill over problem.

If you are not too environmentally friendly or worried about possible gas leakage. Take a screw driver or punch, wrap a rag around both ends, put one in that little vent hole and give it a good shot with a hammer. 8O The hole will open up to the diameter of the screwdriver and the last part of your tank will fill much quicker. I do this to all my bikes to get the most capacity without waiting to trickle fill. I usually get another 40 km out of a tank or so. 8)

I also "modded" my 1150 filler neck,I used a cold chisel angled it into the side of the neck and cut a slot either side, fills much easier now, and I also get an extra 40kms.(25 miles) per tank.

I mooded my GS many years ago so I could fill up as much as possible to do overnight trips. As someone said, don't fill all the way up unless you are going to use it straight away.

I drilled out the vent hole in the filler neck (I was doing other things with the tank at the time). You can use a suitable punch to expand the hole.

The 19 litre tank can hold up to 21 litres, giving a range of over 400 kms.

You know, I've never had that problem, on any bike. Even in California. All I do is grab a handfull of the gas nozzle boot and pull it back. Then I hold the nozzle about 2 inches into the tank hole and pump away. Fills right to the top, as quickly or as slowly as I want it to. Just remember to start out slow if the tanks empty - the fuel can splash out of the tank until you fill it up a little....
