    can a leak come from

where the tack cable goes into?

my bike was always sweating a little bit, but now, for no apparent reason, its *@%^$*@%^$*@%^$*@%^$ing like mad. oil covering my right shoe!

looked quickly, but could not see from where.

yes, it can and often does leak there, check to see if it is loose and replace the o-ring

I think the seal is inside the valve cover.

I'm pretty sure the seal is inside the valve cover. I have yet to go in and fix mine. I put an O-ring between the flange and screw fitting of my cable. Also some teflon tape on the threads. This is holding back the flow for now. I intend on checking and adjusting the valves soon. At that point the tach cable drive will get a new seal.

Yup this will leak and leak and leak and......get the idea?

Someone posted this very recently about this famous leak.

My 2V 1000 motor has 2 gaskets, one where the tach cable goes in and one inside the valve cover. You can tighten the crap out of the outside one, but if the inside one is gone......forget it.
It's a pain in the neck, but replace it..about every 5 years.

I recently bought a 1980 GS850G and it has a leak on the tach cable as well. It also has a bad spot about half way up the cable and had oil all over the cable from the bad spot down. I was wondering if there was a chance oil was travelling up the cable and leaking there. The metal is punctured at the bad spot. Of course I am going to get a new cable anyway but was wondering if oil could travel up the cable or not.
          Thanks,

There is a o-ring in there and also a cone shaped rubber washer in there as well. The whole gear just pulls out and then replace them and re-install.

            Easy fix Buddy.

When I had my 77 550, it had the same problem. I removed the screw and retainer, then pulled the tach drive assembly from the valve cover. You can do this without removing the valve cover. I replaced the oring that goes around the shaft and into the valve cover, and I also replaced the seal in the area where the tach cable screws into.
