JC Whitney rear shocks, has anybody out there used them?

I have an 82 GS750E that squats down in the rear end for most of an evening's ride. It will make a PHssst sound when I get off and the rear end rises up to the full unsprung resting height. I think I need new rear shocks. However, I find the prices of Progressive 412 shocks shocking.
shocks and springs = about $270 American.

Can anyone describe their experienc with JC Whitney shocks. At $79/pair and $10 shipping, they are a temptation.

I have a friend who tried them, said they sucked, see if you can get just the springs from a junker and swap them out, if the stock shock still has some action left in it

I have a very technical method of assessing aftermarket bike parts, that breaks down in simplistic terms to "If it's that cheap, it's gotta be crap"!

Of course, there's always an exception to this rule, I spent a lot of money on Marzocci Strada shocks years ago because they were a standard fitment on Ducati's, they were total garbage and it's no wonder that Ducati fit Japanese "Showa" shocks to their bikes now.

Sometimes you just have to do things right and pay what you have to pay. Are you old enough to remember the H.A helmet advertising slogan that went something like "If you've got a 10 dollar head, buy a 10 dollar helmet". Your shocks are as critical a safety item as your tires and brakes, and their purpose isn't just to stop your back wheel from hitting you in the ass!

A lot of guys have those Progressive 412 mounted and love them. I will be getting a pair myself shortly. I imagine that the JC Whitney units will put you in the same position you are in now after a few thousand miles.

I ride, therefore I am.... constantly buying new tires.
