gs650g engine miss at 4000 rpm and above

I just purchased a 82 gs650g. it would only run if choked hard so I pulled the carbs off and cleaned. After the cleaning the bike runs greate with a good slow idle, but I can't seen to get power after 4000 rpm. The engine boggs and will not take fuel. I can pull off the throttle the engine starts pulling again, Any Idea on what to look for, I have just ordered the manual and can't wait for it to come in.

These bikes will not run well without the airbox properly installed (unless it has been properly rejetted).

Did you get the springs and spacers back in the right order on the slide needles? From bottom up on the needle you should have the spring, then the metal washer, then the e-clip, and finally the plastic spacer over the clip.

Airbox

These bikes will not run well without the airbox properly installed (unless it has been properly rejetted).

When I purchased the bike did not have an air filter, I have one ordered but until it comes in I have taken foam rubber and filled the air box. I will need to wait on the filter and see what happens.

I am pretty sure I replaced them in correct order, I did find that the #1 needle did not want to to go straight into the jett I had to guide it in as I inserted the barrel.

INstalled the air filter and install it

I got the air filter in and installed it , Like a mad man I was so excited about get it running right I thought that I would adjust the air screws, I did not turn the screws in all the way and write down the current setting i just started turning , now I the engine is running very badly, does anyone know the the correct setting or the steps to adjust the air screws, the Clymer Manual I got in does not have show the settings. Please any help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe the carbs "default" to 1 1/2 turns out. Then, you experiment. You turn one screw in or out 1/8 of a turn at a time to find the maximum engine speed. Then you reduce the main idle adjustment, and repeat for the other cylinders. This should give you the most stable idle.

Problem Solved !!

Thanks to this site I no We have solved the problem, I found in the old postings a user talking about the jets in the carbs, under the plastic plug, the manual didnot cover that part, oh well after cleaning the small jet this has cleared up the problem, I also needed to turn out the air screws out 2 full turns. I only had to clean the carbs 6 times to get it right, but man I got it down to an art. Thanks again for the input.
