I have a GS850L I just recently bought. The bike had been sitting for about a year. Well I got a new battery and got her started. It seemed to accelerate fine at first. But, slowly as time went on, I noticed that it started running like it was running out of gas. It idles fine and at high RPM with full throttle it accelerates very well. In between, when I open the throttle, it misfires very badly and will not accelerate. It also pops and sputters out the exhaust when just cruising. I tried changing the plug wires because they were dry rotted. This did not help.Twice I took the carbs off, disassembled them and cleaned them. This seemed to make the problem worse if anything. Could this be an ignition problem or a carb problem? Or could it be a mechanical problem? What kinds of things should I be looking for or checking? Also, this bike has a 4 into 1 after market exhaust and the carbs were re-jetted as far as I know. The bike is not really rideable as is. Anybody have any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Jim.

Misfiring engine GS850L
Hi everyone

Intake leak?
Is the intake system ok? If the original air box, and filter are not in place and sealed well this type of problem happen.

Thanks for the replies.
Plugs are OK. Although there is no air filter in place at the moment. I'll try that.
Thanks again.

misfiring
I had a similar problem with my 82 850 G.
The problem ended up being that one of my coils was not making a great connection. Cleaned and tightened, I haven't had a misfire since.
Good luck.
