carb dumping gas out bowl line, but float is not stuck..help

i'm out working on the 78 GS550 with VM CARBS that i'm trying to sell. here is what is going on.

i have NO power under 4000 RPM...it sounds EXACTLY like when you give the engine throttle with the choke ON, it makes that fluttery sound until 4000 RPM then runs smooth.

the carb body i replaced is dumping fuel out the vent tube. the float is not stuck, i just took it off to change fix the gasket that was leaking. the pilot screw looks like it was drilled out at one point...so could a pilot screw open too much cause too much fuel to get into the bowl and overflow???

please help, i'm out working on the bike now, i'll check back often before dark.

oh...i forgot one thing. the pipe on the side with the carb that is dumping gas is smoking a lot when its running. its putting a white smoke out...

fuel only arrives through the needle and seat and can overflow only because floats stick ,needle sticks or is worn and not sealing air screws etc cannot cause overflow of fuel 8) ozman

screw it. there is defintily a problem with the replacement carb body i got.

i'm gonna junk the carbs and sell them off for parts.

i'll have to find a new set of carbs to put on. dammit, more stuff i have to buy for a bike I DONT WANT! grr. :?

Don't junk 'em yet. Check the o-rings on the float valve bodies. They get dried out and let fuel past. It's also easy to shave a bit of the ring off when you reinstall the valve bodies.

i jsut replaced every o-ring on the damn things...i'm so *@%^$*@%^$*@%^$*@%^$ed.

i just want it to run, so i can sell the bike. it runs, but *@%^$*@%^$*@%^$*@%^$ty.

Did you change the needle and seat? Even if you replaced the O ring the seat could leak Or the float could be set too high

the carb body was replaced, and the needle and slide were re-used. i raised the needle on all of them 1 notch for the pod filters.

i believe i replaced the float seat...where is the needle seat?

The seat is pressed into the carb body and has an O ring to seal it and a clip and screw to hold it in place. . the needle (fuel) fits into the seat assembly to stop fuel flow when the level rises high enough and the float tab pushes the needle up to seal . You could also have a bad float

if you know which carb remove the bowl hook up to fuel then raise and lower float by hand you should be able to see the problem. by the way hold the carbs as if the were on bike meaning upright the fuel should flow as you lower float stop when you raise. BE GENTLE if it is leaking on the oring you will see that without the bowl..ozman

the weird part about the carbs is it runs fine on the choke...sounds like all 4 are firing. but as soon as i'm off the choke, it gets wheezy and wants to die.

i pulled some of the plugs and swapped the ones that looked bad...the one that was smoking a lot was getting too much fuel...but why would it be dumping out the damn vent tube too? it doesn't drip...or run out constantly...but when i revved the engine up, it would take a while to get to 4000 then it would rev better and i watched the carb dump a huge amount of gas out the bowl line. :x

i've already began looking for a replacement set of carbs...

well...in light of everything i guess i'm gonna send these carbs off to Paul Miller in CT. he owes me a favor, and he said he'd have his carb guy go through them and check things out for me.

i'm sick of carbs...i can handle the cleaning, and the fine tuning...but this is enough.

gonna send them out tomorrow...
