Fitting carbs from GSXR on GS 1150

Hi !
Having read all old messages I understand that carburators from older oil cooled GSX-R:s will fit straight on my bike. However, there is now a set of Mikuni CV40:s from a 1994 GSX-R1100 for sale around here, and my question is: Does anyone know how much hassle it would be to fit them on a 1984 GS1150 ?

I don't hink you can use them from the liquid cooled motors. The carb spacing is going to be different. The liquid cooled motors got narrower than the air/oil cooled. The Slingshot carbs from the late '80's models are the way most people go. You could probably also go with later model Bandit or Katana carbs since they use the air/oil cooled motors.

Before I got my smoothbore carbs for my 1150 we tried to fit 93 gsxr 1100 carbs. From what I remember we had no problem fitting them (a little tight but with persistence they fit) but did have a problem getting the bike to run right. I bought them off a road racer at the track and the carbs had a stage 3 kit installed. I don't know if the 93 was air or water cooled in Canada.

I had a guy fitting them to my bike and he was trying to tell me that these were high vacuum carbs as opposed to the low vacuum 1150's or was it the other way around, I'm not sure. The number one cylinder would keep flooding out and the bike would hold the rev's.

This is when I found the smoothbore carbs and he was able to set them up with no problem. We didn't spend a lot of time playing with the gsxr carbs so they might have worked.

'93 was liquid cooled everywhere. That's the year they switched from air/oil cooled engines. The fact they were set up for a liquid cooled bike may have been the problem. I'd probably stick to '88-'92 with the '88-'90 highest on the list. There really isn't anything as good as a set of smoothbores.

GSXR carbs

1100 36mm from the 89-92 Oilcooled work. If you run K&N pod filters go with 155 mains and shim the neddles. The ones I got off Ebay already had a Jet kit but had 160' mains and it was just a little too rich. It was a noticable difference on my 81 GS1100

I think I?ll will pass on the carbs that are for sale. According to your replies, carbs from an oil-cooled GSX-R is the way to go, or even better, a set of smoothbores.

The stock carbs aren?t that bad, if it wasn?t for their sluggish feel and a bit lazy respons. That is why I have considered swapping them for another set.
