Does anyone know what this bushing is for?

I'm polishing the left side of my crankcase, and the last time I took the front sprocket cover off, I noticed a bushing-type thing coming out of the screw hole directly to the right of the sprocket (as viewed from the side, cover off). The bushing eventually came all the way out, and I'm having trouble getting it back in so I can put the cover back on. I'd post pictures, but the digital camera is not available.

Why does this bushing exist? To protect the screw from chain gunk? What should I do to get it back in place? Sanding? WD-40?

Probably serves a couple of purposes. The most likely is that it is there to keep from cracking or distorting the cover when you crank down on the bolt. Try cleaning it up with WS-40 or carb cleaner.

WD-40 and a rubber mallet: problem solved.
