    ceramic coating for exhaust?

has anyone done this to their exhaust before? I know there are places that do ceramic coatings...but will they coat steel exhaust systems from our bikes? i'm sick of rusting headers...and chrome is not the look i'm going for.

any info you guys have would be cool. thanks

$80 for header wrap kit with the black spray...looks like it may be the cheapest and fastest route.

i wish someone made a black paint header for a GS550. i'd have it coated in and out with ceramic paint stuff...and never have to worry about rust again. :x

$70 for the outside...$100 for the inside.

should the muffler be removed before coating? i tried taking mine off when i got it...it was useless.

What....no chrome...? Try BBQ/Grill/Engine paint/spray paint. Its designed to resist heat and can be sprayed on easy. I painted a few gas and BBQ grills and they get hot as hell! Even after cleaning them, the black flat paint is still there. Just make sure to sand the pipes real good 1st. Might be cheaper than the alternatives. No mas rust.......

I have an 850G and I had the entire exhaust system, headers to tip of mufflers, ceramic coated at a local place down in St Augustine, FL. I did not take all of the parts in at one time. Altogether it was maybe $350? Somehting like that. Three years ago. Shop around. Check with Harley Shops and custom bike shops. They are likely to know if anyone in your area does the work. Harley guys like the process because it means no bluing on the pipes. If you can get it done locally you avoid the expense and hassle of shipping.

I bought my 850 new in December, 1979. I have made the decision that I will be keeping it from now on. Once you decide your bike is permanent, ceramic coating the exhaust becomes common sense. It costs less than one exhaust system replacement and means you should never have to buy another unless you wreck.

                      A DIY alternative:

I have not personally used this stuff, but I know of several people who have and were very pleased. The price is also pretty decent compared to commercial application.

Whoever commented on cleaning was right - it has to be PERFECTLY clean for a good coating job. The best choices are bead blasting or hot tanking. The hot tank is the BEST for a steel system, it gets everything off and leaves an awesomely clean surface to coat. You should be able to find local plating/coating places that will do it, or sometimes radiator shops will do a pipe if their tank is the right size.

Yes, it can be done and it's very nice. I looked into having my four-into-one done when I had it blasted ($50) to get the rust off for black paint. The cost for ceramic coating was $150 which seemed too much so I went with the blasting and a can of Rustoleum Flat Black.
