    Looking for a front tire

    Hello list,

I have a 1980 GS1000G. I have kept with the Metzler tires but feel the last replacement front tire didn't last very long. It's a Metzler ME33 Laser and it has about 2500 miles on it and looking like it won't pass inspection.

Does anyone have a better (longer lasting) tire from Metzler that will fit this bike. I ride mostly to work and back, about 20 miles RT from March to October and maybe a short trip one Saturday a month. I ride in all weather so it must be good in rain. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Good Riding!

I don't know how hard you ride so these may not be what you need.

I have had good luck for wear with ME 880's on the front I ran one on a Honda V-65 Sabre, and have a friend running them on his bike, between the two of us it looks like and average of 17K for the front. I am currently running a Dunlop Elite II on the front of my GS-750, this is the first time I have run one of these on the front so I don't know how it will last but at 4000 miles its showing virtually no wear. I decided to try it because I had had good luck with them as a rear on the Sabre getting an average of about 16K miles to the tire. The longest running front tire I have had is the Dunlop F-11 that came stock on the Sabre. I ran several that went for 21K a piece and then got one that was on sale that I found out was five years old after I had it on the bike that only went 12k and then cupped.

I am not sure what size you run but I know these are both available in the 110/90-19 & 18 front and the140/90-16 rear and 130/90-17 rear.

Strange??? I have a ME33 Laser front on my GS850 and I have over 7K miles on it and it still looks very good, should be good for another 5K miles. It sounds like you do a lot of comuting?? So I am wondering why you are only getting 2.5K miles You may have other problems accounting for the wear. Is the tire cupped, side walls cracked ??? Need more info

I didn't finish my previous post.

Both the 880 and the Elite two front felt good in the rain and on dry pavement. The don't have the stick of the old 591's but were more than up to anything I would put them through. They never felt like they were going to let go unless I was riding on icy roads and even there they did better than I had expected. The F-11 was good but it would get feeling a little loose if I pushed it very hard though I never had it let go. The Me-880 and the Elite II just felt better.

What I am looking for in a tire is a good compromise in traction and wear characteristics. I ran the old 591 Dunlops years ago but didn't like riding cross-country to get to a rally and know I'd need a replacement tire to get back if I rode more than a few thousand miles. But if your looking for great handling tires to blast the canyons they are definitely a better choice.
