Dead 85 gs1150e...start clutch issues for sure...now what?

Ok, so I found an 85 gs1150e for sale at a very good deal, but it has starter clutch issues. I hasn't been run in a year or so and when the original problem emerged the first owner bump started it for a while, then removed the started clutch but never fixed the problem.

Any thoughts on where to start?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

As long as the end of the crankshaft is OK, pull the rotor, replace the starter clutch, I would think everything would be fine.

Any sources for fiches and parts? I was trying to find the part numbers on bike bandit but of course, the schematics I want are so poorly scanned you can't make anything out.

Leaving the left (stator) cover off exposes the motor to several problems.

There will almost certainly be water and dirt in the oil pan. If the motor has been turned over then there is a chance that it has been pulled up into the oil system. Pulling the pan to check would be a wise idea.

There is an oil gallery that will be exposed when the cover is off (1/2" round hole that goes through the motor). Dirt, water and insects may have contaminated it, and this oil goes directly up to the top end to lubricate the cams and valves.

Water may even have been able to reach the cam chain and roller bearings, possibly weakening them. With the rotor and starter clutch pulled you may be able to see further into the motor to evaluate.

Most dealers still have this information on hand. An example would be Trans Am Cycle sales in Lititz PA. They can get me almost any part or part number I want for my 78 just for the asking.

Other sources are ebay. I have seen countless microph and CD's as well as service manuals for sale on almost all years makes and models on there.

I have some coming myself and if I can find any info for you or anyone using them I will.

Check pricing from Ron Ayers - I have never seen them beat when it comes to parts pricing. I was going to suggest Bike Bandit but several others have said that the 1150 scans were VERY poor.

The Suzuki part number is 12600-49863 which has been superceded to 12600-49864. According to the Ron Ayers site this part has been discontinued. Crap. Bike Bandit says that they still have it for $112.63. Ron Ayers price was $77.53 plus shipping if they still had it.

                Starter clutch

I have the starter clutch big gear and small with the dowel and roller bearing. The starter clutch you'll have to find somewhere. I think the 1100 will fit if its the big diameter rotor not the Katana. Make sure it has the dowel boss that fits into the back of the rotor, as I sheared my starter clutch allen bolts off three times. Email if you need the gears. Carter. carterturk@hotmail.com

That's a tough one. I'd be worried about crap and rust in the oil passages and engine. I would probably overhaul the engine for peace of mind if nothing else.

                    1150 starter clutch problems

I may have given bad advice regarding rotor size for the 1150. I was just reading an old article in Cycle Guide (Oct 84' remember that mag) and it specifically stated that the rotor is the same size as the 83 ES/S model which is lighter and more compact than the E-models. Sorry about that.

Regarding the electrical. I'd check the connections to the dash and headlight, clean a lubricate them. The dash and headlight should turn on when you turn the key. Replace all fuses which sound like you already did. Also check for solid grounding of battery negative. Sometimes the wire is ground on top of a rubber washer connected to the frame.

You could also try jumping the starter selenoid (sp?) with a screw driver with the key in the on position. You have to scoot back the plastic boot covering the positive terminal to do this.

This bike also has a clutch lever "in" starting procedure so check there for corrosion. Carter
