milage on an engine...true signs
hi everyone...i recently purchased a 1982 gs1100e motor from a chap on ebay...advertised as having "only 13,300 original one owner miles", well, i believed that, however when i recieved it...it was covered with road accumulated oil and dirt on front of the cylinders, ..there was about an inch of chain lube..and the front sprocket teeth were all pointing forward from wear..the compressions cold were around 100, (i was told they were over 120), and the breather outlet area was caked with oil and dirt also, as in cylinder and ring blowby....i know this sounds vague as hell..but can a 13,000 mile motor accumulate that much dirt and oil..(the oil excuse was it came out of the motor when it was tipped during shipping..but the oil was not oily fresh..but was caked with road dirt also) i paid a premium price for this motor..based on the "low miles"..i believe i have been taken for a ride, to put it lightly....what does everyone think??? more than 13,000 miles..seems to me it's more like 63,000 miles...... :x :x :xTags: None

I've bought a bunch of old bikes over the years but I'm new to the GS bikes so everything I suggest should be valued accordingly.
The issue is not always mileage but wear.
It sounds (from your description) that the maintenance wasn't done on this mill and the wear will be high regardless of the mileage. Pointy sprocket teeth, blow by evidence.... Sounds like it was run hard and put away without a glance or regular oil changes.
Is the compression even across the cylinders? If so, most motors will work okay but may not have their full potential.
One way to check blow by is to run a compression check as a base line.
Add a little oil (2 tablespoons via the spark plug hole) to each cylinder and run it again. If the the compression goes up, you've got blow by.
If he said the compression was over 120 and you're getting 100, it COULD be his guage was faulty (or yours is?) and you may have to live with that.
Run a few tests and see if the motor internals are up to snuff. I wouldn't open the crankcase until I knew I was stuck with the motor.
If not, can you return it to him for a refund?
Best of luck!

motor
thanks for the reply ian.yep the previous owner told me it had been drag raced, but only a few passes.(how many is a few.)...the motor is not running right now, so all my comp. tests will be cold....i'm trying to put it in a project bike..i will probably do a differential compression check on the cylinders, shoot 80 psi in each one and see the drop..and i'll also be able to hear where the air is going...rings, or valves.....

I appears you have the engine only, and no carbs attached.
I mention that only because it is necessary to have the throttle OPEN if carbs are attached.
Sorry, but the highest you get is 100 PSI, that is too low. The engine needs work. The 16 valve "E' series engines have incrementally more compression than the "G" 8 valve engines, and I get 125 on my G and GKsBertrand Russell: 'Men are born ignorant, not stupid. They are made stupid by education.'

He may haveonly had it on the track a few times
but it sounds like he did a lot of practicing off-track.
If it has that much wear in 13K, you can be sure
that the clutch is nearly shot too.
If he was racing it, it may not have a stock clutch and springs
in it anyway.

If it was overheated or ran low on oil, or was run without air filters etc etc etc. it may not have many miles, but be in bad shape.

Sounds like a 13K mile engine that has been neglected. Never washed or cleaned up in any way, oil probably never changed, run hard... etc... My car has 147K miles on it and I will take off to anywhere with decent roads right now. It has been meticulously maintained since new, so it is in great shape. I was just given a Ford Festiva with about half that mileage that may not even be worth fixing as it was obviously abused and smokes like the balcony section of a Phish concert. Lack of maintenance is far more harmful than high miles.
I would never buy a vehicle or engine off Ebay unless it were close enough that I could go look at it firsthand. Hate to hear you apparently got had.
