where are the timing marks on the cam sprockets?

On the ignition side. -
There are notches in the ends of the cams that face each other at TDC on cylinder #1. Then there are numbered arrows on the cam sprockets that have to point at a certain pin on the cam chain on each cam. Then you have to count the pins on the chain between an arrow on each cam sprocket. You need a manual to know how many pins to count.Comment

On my bikes there are numbers 1,2, and 3 on the cams. You point number 1 at the front of the motor flat with the valve cover surface. Then you get the timing notches on the ends of the shafts lined up and count the # between marks 2 and 3 as Billy said. The ignitition plate also needs to be lined up with a mark (T I think, not the one that has an advance # on it).
I've done the timing on my 400 without a manual and it's pretty easy but it's impossible to adjust the chain on the exhaust cam without removing the shaft. Making a mistake is terminal though. :x
