How to disengage Starter-button/Clutch disable thingy...

I don't know what its called but there is a little switch on the left handlebar that seems to disable the starter unless you have the clutch pulled in. Is there a way to disable this? I thought I could possibly just ground the contact wire to something and it should function as if the clutch is pulled in anytime I want to start the bike.

Had to figure out why the bike wouldn't start the slightly difficult way. Then I was like "Ahhhhh...so thats it."

Is this a standard feature on all GS750's?

    Thanks

It's a simple fix if you think it is necessary. If you start your bike up in gear and it runs over your Ferrari it's parked next to and then flattens your dog don't blame me. 8O

Follow the wires from your switch into the headlight bucket and disconnect them. Then connect the two sets of wires together. ie. handle bar wires together, harness wires together. That's how it's done on my bikes. A quick look through your manuals wiring diagram should show you how to do it if you want to make sure.

    Cheers, Steve

It's a standard feature on a lot of bikes of all manufacture from many diff years. Mine however doesn't have it and I don't need it. To disable it simply splice the wires leading to it together to defeat the switch.

Depends on the year. Mine doesn't have it. Personally, I feel if one needs that type of big brother device, one has no business being on a bike. Actually, it's probably been legislated in because there are stupid people in the world.

I don't like it myself. I can think of situations where it would be good to use the strength of the starter to pull the bike out of the way if it stalls. ie. when pulling across traffic the bike runs out of gas. Either jump off the bike and abandon it or hit the button and scoot out of harms way.

use an ohm meter to tell if the clutch lever switch is normally opened or normally closed and go from there.

I used it to start off from lights when my clutch cable screwed up. 8)

I took the two screws out of the grip and dropped the switch down. Then I soldered the two wires together without cutting anything. That way the stock appearance thing is going on but voila, no safety switch!

When your clutch cable goes, very useful to start with the clutch engaged. A far more useful device isthe Kawasaki one where the headlight is temporarily disabled while starting.

Ah ha! Sounds good. I'll check the switch out before I solder just to be safe though like Slopoke said.

The switch is not part of the wiring harness. You can connect the wires together inside the headlight bucket.

my 1000G has the switch and requires you to squeeze the clutch to start, my ZN1300 voyager has a switch on the clutch lever also but it disables the starter if you squeeze the clutch!! the starter spins the engine over via the transmission, not direct to the crank like the GS does.
