    Slight leak in carb...

    Forgive my questions, but I'm new to this. I just went out to invistigate the slight gas smell from my 85 gs550e, and found that one of the carbs has a slight leak. Nothing real bad, just a little bit of gas on my fingertip when I checked it out. Nothing on the ground and very little on the bike itself. I also know the tank is a bit rusty, so the gas was a bit brown. Please confirm, but I think I'll need to take care of the tank and maybe put new gaskets on the carbs. They're the 2-into-1 type. Thanks!

    Yep. Sounds like crud in the tank made it between the carb needle valve and it's seat letting fuel seep by it thus causing the leak. Get the tank cleaned out, fresh fuel and a good carb cleaning/rebuild and you'll probably be alright. Might get the oil changed too, since fuel has a way of finding it's way into crankcase too.

        It can never hurt to be too safe...
        Sniff and change the oil if it smells "Gassy".

          How complicated is the carb work? I've heard horror stories about these 1-into-2 carbs on this model, particularly about removing them. I have a Clymer manual to help, but would I be better off having a shop do this? If I do it, how much time should I budget? Thanks again!

            I think I may have found my own answer. For this I'll probably tak eit somewhere and have them do the carb work. I have neither the time nor the patience (or know-how). How much will something like this set me back, financially?

              Does anyone have any experience with this? Should I attempt this or am I just better off biting the bullet and paying to have the job done? I'm new to this and don't really have much free time, so paying, for me, might be the way to go, at least for this job. Thanks!

                I'm not familiar with your type of carbs but it shouldn't really be too tough. If you don't think you really want to try it, at least take them off to have a shop do the work and you'll save some $$$ instead of paying them to remove them. The problem is finding a shop or someone you know and trust to do the work for you. I would think with dealers charging $75.00 an hour labor, you'd be looking at $200 to $300 plus parts. This is just my best guess. Get the fuel tank problem solved first. If it were me I'd take the fuel tank off and not let anymore fuel leak anywhere. Then change the oil. Gassy oil is probably not too good on soft internal engine parts (seals, gaskets etc)

                  Do you recommend a complete gasket set, or is there a set just for the carbs? Turns out the person who sold it to me is willing to help.

                    Here was the question:

                    Will this kit work for the 85 gs550e? It has the Mikuni BSW30SS carbs. They're 1-into-2 carbs, meaning 4 cyl, but only 2 carbs. Thanks!

                    I wish I could answer that question. I've never heard of a BS-series
                    carb that these wouldn't fit, but I'm not familiar with every single
                    variation on the Mikunis of that era.

                    In other words -- 'beats me. How close do your carbs look to those in
                    the GS Resources carb cleaning sequence?
