    Head gasket?

    Hey,

Looks like I'm going to have to pull the head off my bike. I noticed that the head gasket is like $60 or $70, which are nasty numbers for my wallet. Anyway, I was wondering if the head gasket on these bikes (mine is 1980 GS550L) is of standard gasket material or of copper (or something similar)? If it's standard gasket material, I assume I'd have to replace it. If it's copper or something, is it ok to reuse the same one? or would I have to replace it anyway?

    Thanks.

    gasket

They are fibre gaskets. If you are keen the barrell needs to come off as it gets disturbed when you git the head off and starts to leak. In other words be prepared to spend time/money to do the job right.

That gasket set on the site that mckiver listed looks like it includes a metal head gasket. Would that be reusable? Or would some part of it compress and thus require replacing?

I just replaced the headgasket on my 850. I got the gaskets from Suzuki and they were expensive. It was like 70 bucks for the head gasket itself not to mension all the other goodies that I needed.
Anyway the gasket is real nice its 5 layers of metel stamped together at the holes. I have a feeling that the gasket will last longer than the rest of the engine.
