What brand of kit did you buy? I bought some generic float valves and they came with the grooves for the strainers so I put them on. The only thing I was missing was a washer for one of the pilot jets but I don't think they are too important.

Humm Time For a New Approach
#4 Cylinder has a weak spark? and the bike runs after sitting (for a short period)?
Have you checked the charging and ignition circuits? I had the exact same problem ... it turned out to be a failed stator (I also had a failed vacuum diaphragm).
good luck

Yeah, for 60 bucks each. Somebody here posted a way of fixing them though. I think they used some kind of glue.

just put everything back together and set my bike to prime then sucked on the vacume line so that it would start filling the floats and nothing it only stays coming out as long as im sucking on it. wont continue flowing when set on prime after i stop sucking on it.
I then decided i would take it off prime and suck on it a long time to fill the float bowls manually then when i try to start the bike no luck. Is it supposed to stop once vacum is halted when set on prime? cause it was working fine before i took it off

According to the factory manual, these 1980 petcocks require cranking the motor to initiate fuel flow when on prime. With the slot vertical, you're on prime. And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

Ok, thanks...i just remember before i took off my tank from the bike that if i merely sucked on the vacume hose once when it was on prime the flow would continuously. Now if i do that it will only flow as long as i suck.
Additionally with it on the bike when i crank the engine i don't seem to be pulling very much fuel into the floats.

From what you say, if it was me, I would look into a Pingel fuel valve and get to riding. And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!

ok well the bike started and was running fine last night, but today when i try to start the bike it was very labored, when it finnaly started the bike would have trouble staying running, and when i touch the throttle the bike instantly dies
Things to note: i have gaps between the rubber boots and the air box

*bangs head against table*
I took apart fuel valve and cleaned it and put it back together...i noticed nothing get any cleaner, but i put it back on the bike and the bike started up.
bike runs fine now...but i dont know why and i dont know why it quit lol.
Something to add: when i turn off the bike smoke comes out of the right tail pipe for some time

i started up the bike, let it idle for a good 5 minutes it was running fine, i could blip the rpm up to 5-6k and it would also respond well.
Then i took it on the road within 600 ft the bike would start to die Whenever i pressed the throttle, it would only respond to light throttle turns and eventually it would not even respond well to that and it died.
I dont know why it died.
when i took apart the carbs after the float bowls were full of fuel
I have taken apart the carbs several times, but have not adjusted the bikes throttle synch since it seemed to be fine before when the bike was running fine. I dont think it would be that they got out of synch but what do those symptoms suggest?

Sounds like it's running out of fuel. Try a new vacuum line. If that does'nt help, replace the petcock diaphragm if possible, if not, get a replacement fuel valve. And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!

yeah, your petcock is still causing trouble. If you were to hook a clear line to your drain plug and point it upwards you'd see the level drop when you opened the throttle. It's not supposed to go down enough to run out.
