    gs1000e compression

any idea what compression i should have on my 1978 gs1000e.
the bike fires up off the button every time no problem, it smokes a little bit on initial start up.
but runs lumpy even though i have cleaned and ballenced the carbs.

Out of the manual for the 1000.

    Normal compression = 128-184 psi
    Minimum compression = 100 psi

When I rebuilt my 78 GS the compression had fallen to less than 120psi and it used oil all the time, particularly on hills etc. The smoking on startup is likely to be valve guide seals, due to old age. Mine does that too, but everything else is fine. One way to minise this is to start the bike after leaving it on the centrestand, this stops the pooling of too much oil on number 1 cylinder particularly. A bit less smoke or none perceptible on startup.

A basic rule of thumb is if the smoking is on start up or during acceleration/deceleration only it is the guides, if it is a continuous thing it is the rings. Not always true, but a general guide to start thinking about tear down and rebuild plans.
