Robert I extensively checked into this some time back You can get by running a 3/8 offset with the stock cover. You may have to remove the material inside. Anything more than that needs a bearing support. Honestly personally I would run a support with a 3/8 but again thats me. You also have to start being concerned with the chain hitting the inside of the frame. A 530 works out much better in a offset due to chain width. remember the weakest link in the GS tranny is the output shaft and outer bearing. The shaft is hollow and the bearing is bad in a performance application at best. Those are two things that you replace immeadiately in a performance engine. Precision(Performance) Metal Fab has one of the nicest looking supports and Kosman but they are hard to deal with. They also have at times a 1/2 inch offset which may come in handy. If you have a low HP engine with the billet shaft and good output bearing probably get by with the 3/8 OK without the support. MRE is a good source for help also....ask for Jay.
