1979 GS1000L Turns over but does not start
Hi there I am new to this forum and just became the owner of a 1979 GS1000L. Did not cost me anything. I have cleaned the carbs, but there is no or little fuel in the carb bowls on the far right and far left carbs after trying to start the engine. If I use engine start it will stay running as long as that lasts. This bike has been sitting for about 7 years...was in good working order. I have changed oil and filter cleaned the carbs. Drained old gas put in new, replaced spark plugs....any suggestions? I am relatively mechanical for a female...thanks...would love to get this running with out having to take it to the shop if possible...thanksTags: None

For starters
if you take the fuel line off the petcock does fuel flow when the lever is in the prime position((if it is a vacume valve)). If a standard valve then fuel should flow from the petcock whenever the lever is in the on position.

Gas flows from the petcock only if the engine is attempting to turn over...if it is on prime nothing flows without attempting to start the bike and when it does flow it spurts....this normal??

do a search for petcock here someone has done a whole article on that before. I believe you can still get the parts from a dealer or you could try E-bay.

You can get a new stock petcock from cycle recycle. I have been dealing with them for years and they ship priority mail. I usually get things in about 3 days. Their catalog is at http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/Index_Main_Frame.htm
Thats the suzuki petcocks they carry.
I have quit using stock vacuum type petcocks and instead use Pingle mechanical petcocks. I get those from Streetfighters at
They ship UPS and it usually takes 5-7 days. Scroll down the page for the applications listing. You will need the petcock and an adapter plate.
Oh, not to worry, I am confident the GSR can help you get it running just fine. :-)

I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself than be crowded on a velvet cushion. H.D.T.

First thing would be to remove the petcock and clean it, maybe all it needs. If it still does not work you can Go to ebay where you can either get a complete repair kit for $22
Replacement Petcock for $48
OR you can install a pingle manual operation petcock $80

I am in the Orlando area. I took the petcock off last night and tried to get it to function. If I hold the diaphram in place it worked but as soon as I put the spring and cover back on it stops the flow. I will locate a repair kit or go the pingle route I guess. Thanks again.

Re check it
With the lever pointed down it is in the ON position No fuel will flow until vacuum is applied to the diaphram.
With the lever pointed towards the rear in the prime position fuel will flow all of the time
With the lever pointed to the front Reserve position No fuel will flow until vacuum is applied to the diaphram
You can suck on the vacuum line that goes to the petcock to see if the diaphram is working

I did that last last night....in the prime position no fuel flows....I have looked in many places and at this pont it seems I need to order a new one from suzuki. I tried the links above and they have nothing for my model. I do not want to dump alot of money into this thing...I already have an offer for $500 to buy the engine...am considering it. I took the petcock to the suzuki dealer and he said I needed to replace the whole thing not just a rebuild kit....do not know if that was true or him just trying to make a sale.

Rebuilds do not always come out as a working valve. It may be cheaper for you to go the pingle route. there is a guy in safety harbor fla. murdoch racing that stocks them. You must measure the distance between the 2 mounting screws. Chart applications are not always on the money in the pingle valve replacement area.
