I'm used to shutting off the gas. All dirt bikes require it. You just do it - part of the process.

The hex or round shape is a matter of preference...you need to measure the inlet hole in your tank. If it's either 34mm or 44mm, I think you can use the vacuum model. Otherwise, you'll have to use a standard Pingel. The reason for this is because you'll need an adapter plate which will cost you another 10 bucks or so and the vacuum model will only accomodate a couple of the adapter sizes.
If you do a search on the forum, you'll find all the information you'll need to put it on your bike. My bike is a 1980 and those are the most difficult ones to deal with; I put one on and it works just great. Good luck!1980 GS1100E....Number 15!

Unless i missed something i believe that you meant to say "you need to measure the distance from center to center between the mounting screws on your tank? I theenk 8O

Some GS models have virtually no clearance between the tank and the top of the carbs: a bigger petcock won't fit. Make sure that you have room for the petcock and adapter plate.

Right
Don, that's what I meant when I said that my 1980 is the toughest one (the least amount of clearance). My Pingel was a tight fit but it DOES fit and doesn't rub against anything....if there's a model that has less clearance, I don't know which one it might be...I think the 1980 models are the worst. :roll:1980 GS1100E....Number 15!

Crap, I planned on buying a pingle valve this spring for my 81 GS750L. Don't tell me the darn thing won't fit now....

Yes
It will definitely fit your '81 Gs750L; that was my point, exactly. It will be important how you mount it but it will fit.1980 GS1100E....Number 15!

When buying a pingle for my 1980 GS550L, center to center on the mounting bolts were 50mm, I think most other years were 44mm. I think.
The best way is just to measure before ordering. The chrome Pingle valves have brass internals which last longer and are smoother as oppose to the aluminum counter parts. Search Pingle fuel valve on this forum and you'll come up with some good posts with part numbers.
As long as your carbs are in good shape (preferably cleaned with new float valves, needles & seats), you can get buy with occaisonally leaving the gas on for short periods of time. I have so far. Knock on wood!!! I would advise turning it off though.
